We’re off on a maritime excursion to the extremely elegant and authentic town of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, which lays nestled between Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and the coastline of Eze. The steep lanes, colourful cottages and bougainvillier plants of Beaulieu-sur-Mer offer an excursion of understated refinement.
A charming walk with panoramic views
From the rue du marché, turn into and follow the chemin des Myrtes as it gently climbs, alternating between narrow stepped lanes and steep paths. Next take the chemin de la Madone Noire on the left, which leads to the "Balcon du Midi" where you can enjoy fantastic views over Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Villefranche-sur-mer.
To continue the walk, take the chemin des Serres, a road that overhangs the superb bay of Villefranche. The path gently wends its way down to a staircase that leads to the Port of Saint-Jean. Just a few minutes walk along the seafront brings you back to where you started.
Beaulieu-sur-Mer – architectural heritage
While you’re in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, take time to explore its architectural heritage. Beaulieu-sur-Mer’s most famous building, La Rotonde, with its open terrace, canted dome and great circular glass-fronted hall, is proof of the town’s Belle Epoque past.
Inaugurated in 1899, the luxury hotel, Le Bristol, has many illustrious visitors; Le Palais des Anglais was the town’s first hotel, opening in 1885.
The music stand dates back to 1904, while the Anglican Church of Saint Michael, built in 1893, stands as a reminder that Britons were among the first visitors to recognise and appreciate the delights of Beaulieu-sur-Mer.
