Today, we are going on a cultural, artistic and nature-filled excursion to the charming village of Aups and the Faykod Museum in the Var region.
Aups, a village full of character and history
Located in the Var Region, among the first Alpine foothills, Aups is a typical yet multi-faceted Provençal village. Situated at the gates of the Verdon Gorge and close to Lake Sainte-Croix, it offers many sporting activities, such white-water sports, canyoning, rock-climbing and trekking.
Aups has a rich architectural heritage. It boasts ancient doors, houses dating back to the Middle Ages, fountains, carved lintels and sundials, not to mention its gothic collegiate church and impressive ramparts.
A marriage of art and nature
This historically rich village is also home to the incredible Faykod Museum.
The Faykod Museum is hidden far from the Azur coast, nestled in the middle of nature. It is a timeless, surprising, and sometimes magical place where the works of artist, Maria de Faykod, intertwine with the surrounding grassland.
Faykod’s white marble sculptures are peppered throughout this open air museum. Rendered sublime by the surrounding light, wind and shadows, you will find them hiding in surprising places (behind trees) and be surprised by the forms (such as the sculptures of Princess Diana and a magical unicorn).
The museum makes for an enchanting walk!
NB: Maria de Faykod enthusiasts will be able to purchase sculptures or buy moulds of some of her works.
If you wish, you can prolong the day by visiting Des Gourmets Restaurant in Aups. All year round it offers Provençal cuisine based on a mix of seasonal ingredients and prestige products, such as foie gras and truffles.
