This week we are taking you on an excursion to the Bay of Toulon which will include a boat trip following by a short walk around the delightful town of Saint-Mandrier-sur-mer.
Boat trip
The rendezvous point for this excursion is at the Toulon port maritime station. The Toulon-Saint-Mandrier boat leaves roughly every two hours and only costs €2 per person. The crossing lasts around twenty minutes and gives you an opportunity to enjoy the impressive views of Toulon port and surrounding bay.
You will set foot on the pretty port of Saint-Mandrier, where you will see sailing boats and small fishing boats moored happily side by side. When visiting Saint-Mandrier on a Saturday, you will also have the pleasure of exploring the market that lies between the port and the village.
For lunch at Saint-Mandrier, we recommend the simple generous cuisine offerd by Le Calypso restaurant, which has a lovely terrace boasting views over the Bay of Toulon.
Coastal path
If you enjoy walking by the sea, then you will love the many walking paths that the beautiful peninsula of Saint-Mandrier has to offer. Starting from the town, we will follow the coastal path that joins Saint-Mandrier to Saint-Elme via the Marégau point.
From the port, join the large Place des Résistants, where the Tourism Office is located; go up towards the town and take rue Jean Aicard, followed by the "Creux Saint-Georges" path which runs along the peninsula’s military zone. This path leads to Cavalas and Coudoulière beaches.
From there, join the coastal path taking you right by the water’s edge and through the Saint-Asile pine forest, on a discovery tour of the peninsula’s built heritage: Saint-Elme fort, Gros Bau fort and Coudoulière small fort.
The landscape around the Marégau point is very pretty. A panoramic chart explains the superb views that you will see there, such as the Deux-Frères Rock, Cape Siciè and the Hyères Islands.
From the Port of Saint-Elme, you can return to the Port of Saint-Mandrier via Departmental Road 18, or just go back the way you came, which is longer, but a nicer journey.
The journey there and back takes about 4 hours.
