Cannes

One of my favourite places on the French Riviera, except from my beloved Nice of course, is Cannes. You have probably already heard of it, this glamorous little city, famous for its annual film festival. The city has around 70 000 inhabitants, and almost the double during the summer season when all the tourists, both French and foreign, come to spend their vacation in this chic place.

The name Cannes probably has its origin in the word Canua, that was the name of the Ligurian town in the 10th century. Canua is a type of reed. Another theory is that the name Cannes has developed from the indo-european word ”kan” that means ”crag”, which would make sense since the city of Cannes was originally founded on the hill Suquet.

This lovely little city is situated about 33 km from Nice. I usually take the train to go there, which is easy and comfortable, and it only takes around 40 minutes! Trains depart approximately every half hour from Nice, and you will arrive at the train station in Cannes, that is located in the city center. You can walk from the train station down to the famous boardwalk ”la Croisette”, where you can take a look at le Palais des Festivals, the place where the annual film festival is held. This huge event brings about 30 000 visitors every year, and the city is full of people and parties for 11 days. If you go there during the festival week you might even have the chance to spot one of your idols walking the red carpet or partying in one of the great clubs of Cannes. I once met the singer Ne-Yo at a pool party!

However, Cannes has so much more to offer. When you have seen le Palais des Festivals, have a look at all the famous hand prints outside the building, and then take a nice stroll down the sunny boardwalk. ”La Croisette” is a lovely place that has something for everyone, here you can eat delicious ice cream, ride the carousel, look at art from local talents, go swimming on the sandy beaches or just watch all the people walking by.

Do not forget to pay the old town a visit! This part of the city is located on the hill Suquet, the very same hill that might has given Cannes its name. This part of the town has a genuine and charming atmosphere with many winding streets and small cafes. Sit down and have a ”citron pressé” in the shade before visiting the old castle!
