Cap d'Ail

It was a normal Saturday morning at my boyfriend's place. We had some friends visiting us, they were staying with us for the week end. We took a much needed sleep-in, and got up at 11 am.

We had a delicious breakfast out on the terrace. While sitting there, enjoying the sun, the idea of an excursion began to take shape. We had very specific requirements for the destination: it would not be a place we had already been to, and it had to be a place where you could work on you sun tan. After some discussion we finally agreed on a destination: Cap-d'Ail.

But first, one of our friends insisted on a quick trip to the fish market at Place Saint-François in the old town. The fish market is a unique experience. The atmosphere is exuberant and genuine. It feels very "Mediterranean" to go to a market in the open air, and buy fresh fish right from the fisherman who caught it. We purchased some sea bream, and then we returned home to prepare our little excursion to Cap-d'Ail. We packed our beach bags, and made some sandwiches for lunch.

Cap-d'Ail is a French commune, in the region of Provence- Alpes- Cote d'Azur, situated just next to the boarder of eastern Monaco. It has about 5000 inhabitants. We went there by car, which was convenient but still problematic, since it was practically impossible to find a parking space. After circulating for a while we finally found a gap, parked the car and went down to the beautiful Plage Mala. This beach is like a hidden little paradise, with clear blue water and surrounding hillsides.
Since Plage Mala is situated inside of a bay, the sea is calm and the waves are not very high. The water is shallow, which makes it a good place for children to swim as well.

Unfortunately, we just got to enjoy this alluring place for a few hours before the weather suddenly changed, like it sometimes does in Mediterranean area, and the rain started pouring down. We quickly packed our stuff and ran as fast as we could to the car, and then we went back home. When we arrived in Nice, the rain just had stopped and the sun began to shine again. Our friend, who is head waiter at a really fancy restaurant, cooked the sea bream, and we finished this pleasant day with a delicious dinner out on the terrace, while watching the sunset.
