Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

One might think that Saint Jean Cap Ferrat is a very long name, but it actually consists of two different names: Saint Jean (which is a beautiful fishing village) and Cap Ferrat (which is the name of the magnificent peninsula that stretches between Nice and Monaco). If you have not already been to this lovely little place, I recommend you to go here immediately! It is the perfect destination for a day trip.

My friends and I went here a Saturday morning in May to work on our suntans. We put on our bikinis and sunglasses, packed our bags, and left Nice in a good mood. By bus is probably the easiest way yo go to Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, you take Lignes d'Azur, bus NR 81 from Nice port. This is probably also the cheapest way to travel, since the ticket is only 1,50 €!

Cap Ferrat has been one of the most exclusive and expensive areas to live on the French Riviera since the 19th century, but somehow it has preserved its original, charming character. Here you can find luxury houses, a beautiful landscape, peaceful beaches, and a few cafes and restaurants. This is the perfect get away if you against all odds, would get enough of the exuberant life in Nice. As my friend Adriana said: “This is the place I wanna go on my honeymoon! Doing nothing else than just be in love and enjoy this beautiful village!”.

We spent a couple hours at the beach, just enjoying each others company, the sun and the alluring view. The water in Cap Ferrat is colder than in Nice, and rather dark blue than turquoise, but much clearer. You can actually see the seabed while swimming, even out on deep water!

In the afternoon we went to visit the architectural masterpiece Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, also known as “La Villa Île-de-France”. This is a beautiful building from the beginning of the 20th century that is open for the public, it was designed by the French architect Aaron Messiah for Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild. Here you can see antique furniture, paintings, sculptures and a considerable collection of unique porcelain. The villa is surrounded by nine (!) gardens, decorated according to different themes, one more beautiful than the other. My personal favourite is “La roseraie”, a garden filled with only roses. Breathtaking!
