1914 : Declaration of war from Germany to Russia


On 1 August 1914, seeing Russia militarily supporting Serbia against Austria-Hungary, Germany declared war on Russia.

1936 : Olympic Games opened in Berlin


On 1st August 1936, the most controversial Olympic Games in history opened in Berlin. Hitler wanted to use these games as a propaganda of the superiority of the Nazis. His pride was nonetheless affected when the black American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals.

1944 : Beginning of the Warsaw Uprising


On 1 August 1944, resistance organized the Warsaw Uprising against the German army and to be defined politically before being conquered by the Soviet army. Due to the lack of resources, experience and help from the Allies, the uprising was crushed after 63 days of fighting. 200,000 Polish civilians and fighters were killed. The survivors were sent to camps.

2003 : Death of Marie Trintignant


On August 1, 2003, actress Marie Trintignant, who had been hit badly by her companion, Bertrand Cantat, the night of July 26 to 27, died from her injuries.

2004 : Fire in a supermarket in paraguay


On 1 August 2004, a fire broke out in the Ycua Bolaños supermarket in Asunción, Paraguay. 394 people were killed and 500 others were injured. Exit doors were blocked to prevent people leaving without paying.
