1755 : Earthquake in Lisbon


On 1 November 1755, an earthquake devastated the city of Lisbon. A tsunami followed, damaging even more the city. At leaset 60,000 people were killed and almost all houses, buildings and monuments were destroyed. The city had to be fully built. The task was assigned to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal who determined strict building codes and numerous gardens to protect the population in case of future earthquakes.

1952 : First test of the hydrogen bomb by the United States


On 1 November 1952, the U.S. tested their first thermonuclear bomb in Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific. This new hydrogen bomb was 1000 times more powerful than the atomic bombs before. Critics, among them that of J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the fathers of the atomic bomb, were raised against this test because of fear of an arms race between the different powers, fear that proved to be justified.

1970 : Fire in Club Cinq-Sept in Isere


On 1 November 1970, around 1:40 am, a smoldering match set fire to a cushion in the Club Five-Seven nightclub , in Saint-Laurent-du-Pont in Isère. The fire spread quickly to the decor and ceiling. Very few people managed to escape and 146 of them die. The nightclub was recently built but had not been controlled as it was required before it opened. The scene was highly flammable; there was no fire extinguisher and emergency exits were blocked.

1993 : Coming into effect of the Maastricht Treaty


On 1 November 1993, the Maastricht Treaty establishing the European Union came into effect in the 12 States which ratified it: France, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Greece, Spain, Portugal , Denmark, Ireland. The Treaty also established the foundation for a single currency, the euro.
