1776 : The American Congress votes independence


On July 2, 1776, at a meeting in Philadelphia, the Continental Congress, which was the government of the 13 American colonies, voted independence from England.

1881 : President Garfield mortally wounded


On July 2, 1881, U.S. President James A. Garfield was shot in a train station in Washington DC. The President died two and half months later. His attacker was arrested and sentenced to death.

1947 : Soviet Union rejected the Marshall Plan


On July 2, 1947, the Soviet Foreign Minister, Molotov, rejected the Marshall Plan, American aid plan to rebuild Europe.
Molotov did not want Germany to take advantage of the plan and wanted to have a say on any aid to that country.
The Soviet Union also pressured the countries of Eastern Europe to refuse the plan.

1964 : Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act


On July 2, 1964, U.S. President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act which prohibited discrimination in public places. The civil rights activists had fought for years against all forms of segregation of minorities. Therefore, it was an historical moment.

1994 : Assassination of Colombian footballer Andres Escobar


On July 2, 1994, Colombian footballer Andrés Escobar was murdered because he accidentally scored a goal against his team at the World Cup. Because of this goal, Colombia lost its match against the United States and at the same time was eliminated from the competition.

Stop the itching caused by mosquito bites


No chance! Despite all the protections, you were bitten by mosquitoes.
These bites itch a lot, but do not scratch otherwise you could be infected by bacteria which live under your nails for example.
When it's itching, soak a clean bandage in baking soda, wring lightly and apply it on bites. You should keep it for 15 to 20 minutes.
You can also apply ice, directly on the bite or over the bandage .
Then you can apply a 1-percent hydrocortisone cream, if it is not contraindicated.
If the inflammation is severe, do not hesitate to consult your doctor.
