1901 : Huge fire in Florida


On May 3, 1901, a fire broke out in a mattress factory in Jacksonville, Florida. The fire spread in the city and ended up destroying over 2,300 buildings.

1946 : War Crime Trials for Japanese officials


On 3 May 1946, the International Military Tribunal for the Far East began its debates against the Japanese military and members of the Japanese government accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity for their atrocities during WW2.
At the end of the trial, only 7 of them were sentenced to death and 16 others sentenced to life imprisonment.

1962 : Train accident in Japan


On 3 May 1962, a train accident involving two commuter trains and a freight train near Tokyo, Japan killed 160 people and injured 350 others. The freight train had not complied with a warning and had been diverted. In so doing, driving too fast, it was derailed on a parallel track.
The first commuter train could not avoid the carriages of the freight train being on its way. While the survivors, escaped from the train, due to the fact that no train had been warned of the crash, a second commuter train arrived at the scene of the accident and the crash that followed was even more terrible than the first one.

1968 : Beginning of the occupation of the Sorbonne


On May 3, 1968, students occupied the Sorbonne. At the request of university administration, they are forcibly evicted by police and hundreds of them were arrested. This was the beginning of events more and more violent by the students against the police.

1979 : Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister


On May 3, 1979, in the United Kingdom, the Conservative Party won the parliamentary elections and its leader, Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister. She was the first woman to hold this position in the country.

1991 : Last episode of Dallas


On May 3, 1991, CBS broadcasted the last episode of Dallas, which ended 13 seasons of the Ewing family saga.

Kenpō Kinen Bi
On 3 May, is Constitution Day in Japan (Kenpo Kinen Bi). The postwar constitution of Japan was signed in 1947 and prohibits maintaining an Army.
To circumvent the constitution, Japan created the Japan Self-Defense Forces, troops assigned in theory to defend the country.
World Press Freedom Day
May 3 is World Press Freedom Day. This day was created by the United Nations in 1993 and is an opportunity to highlight to people the attacks on freedom of expression and the dangers faced by investigative journalists.
