1940 : Operation Catapult


On July 3, 1940, the British launched Operation Catapult and destroyed the French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir in Algeria.
The British had asked the French fleet to join them, to disarm or be scuttled. Since the Vichy government refused to comply, British forces had to attack the French ships so that they would not be used by the Germans.

1962 : Proclamation of Independence of Algeria


On July 3, 1962, two days after a referendum with an almost unanimity, the president of the French Republic, Charles De Gaulle, proclaimed the independence of Algeria.

1970 : Plane crashes near Barcelona


On July 3, 1970, a British Comet 4 turbojet , flying towards the Costa Brava in Spain, crashed near Barcelona. The 112 people aboard were killed. The cause of the accident could not be established but the Comet Turbojet had been involved in a series of accidents due to poor resistance of the fuselage.

1988 : The United States shot down a Iranian passenger plane


On 3 July ,1988, the U.S. Navy cruiser USS Vincennes mistakenly slaughtered an Iranian passenger plane carrying 290 passengers over the Strait of Hormuz. The Vincennes had taken the ascending Airbus A300B2 for an F-14A Tomcat in an attack run. The United States, after denying their error, have finally acknowledged the facts, apologized and compensated the victims' families.
