1778 : Inauguration of La Scala in Milan


On August 3, 1778, La Scala in Milan was opened with an opera by Antonio Salieri. It gained its glory in large part thanks to Verdi who played several of his operas there and to its famous conductors such as Arturo Toscanini, Claudio Abbado and Riccardo Muti.

1914 : Germany and France declare war to each other


On August 3, 1914, two days after declaring war on Russia, Germany decided to attack France. France, as an ally of Russia and attacked nation, also replied by its own declaration of war.

1958 : The Nautilus traveled under the North Pole


On August 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus passed under the North Pole on his journey from Alaska to Iceland.

1975 : Plane crash in Morocco


On August 3, 1975, a Boeing 707 chartered by the Royal Air Morocco, from Paris to Agadir, crashed into the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, two minutes before landing. The 188 passengers and crew were killed.

2004 : Reopening of the Statue of Liberty


On August 3, 2004, the Statue of Liberty was reopened to visitors for the first time since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
