1930 : A hurricane hit the Dominican Republic


On September 3, 1930, a hurricane with winds exceeding 320 km/h hit the Dominican Republic. Ports and crops were destroyed. 8000 people were killed.

1939 : Declaration of war by France and Great Britain to Germany


On September 3, 1939, in response to the invasion of Poland by the Germans, France and the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. The first victims of this war were the passengers of the British ship SS Athenia, who was sunk this day by a German submarine while carrying 1100 passengers from Glasgow to Montreal. 98 passengers and 19 crew members were killed.

1976 : Viking 2 landed on Mars

2004 : Dramatic end to a hostage crisis in North Ossetia


On September 3, 2004, the hostage crisis at a school in Beslan in North Ossetia ended in a bloodbath. On 1 September, a group of Chechen terrorists took 1100 hostage at the School Number 1 in Beslan. On 3 September, the Russian authorities had to storm the school after some explosions in the building. More than 380 people, among them many children, are killed.
