1776 : Declaration of Independence of the United States


On July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America against the United Kingdom. The declaration was largely written by Thomas Jefferson, influenced by the political philosophy of John Locke. The war of independence continued for 5 years before the final victory of the Americans over the British in 1781. And the Treaty of Paris in 1783 recognized the United States of America as an independent state.

1826 : Death of Jefferson and Adams


On July 4, 1826, former presidents and the last founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, died within 5 hours of each other. They had been strong opponents and close friends, according to the periods of their lives.

1976 : Operation Entebbe


On July 4, 1976 Israeli commandos launched a rescue mission of the hostages taken during the hijacking of an Air France plane by Palestinian terrorists on June 27, 1976. The hijacked plane landed in Entebbe airport in Uganda and all non-Jewish passengers were released.
During the operation of Israeli commandos, three hostages and one commando were killed as well as the seven hijackers and 45 Ugandan soldiers . The 102 other hostages were freed. The commando killed, Yonatan Netanyahu, was the older brother of Benjamin Netanyahu who became Prime Minister of Israel from 1996 to 1999 and from 2009.

1997 : Mars Pathfinder lands on Mars


On July 4, 1997, the Mars Pathfinder landed on the surface of Mars. It was launched December 4, 1996 by NASA. Its mission was to analyze the atmosphere and study the geology of Mars. The probe sent to Earth thousands of images and millions of measurements.
