1870 : Proclamation of the Third Republic


On September 4, 1870, during the war with Germany, and two days after the capture of Napoleon II by the Germans, the Third Republic was proclaimed. For 9 years, the various political movements had competed for the regime to implement before the final victory of the Republicans in the elections of 1877, 1878 and 1879. Little power was given to the President of the Republic as the President of the Second Republic had taken a family practice and made a coup to become emperor.

1886 : Geronimo surrendered


On September 4, 1886, Apache leader Geronimo surrendered to U.S. authorities. He was the last Indian leader to surrender, ending the Indian wars. Geronimo had fought all his life to protect the lands of his people of Mexican and American settlers. His family had been killed by settlers from Mexico. In 1874, the people of Geronimo was parked in a reservation in Arizona by the U.S. government. Geronimo escaped with some of his warriors. They had been recaptured several times and fled after each forced return. In 1884, Geronimo surrendered for the last time, to General Nelson Miles and ended his life peacefully.

1972 : Mark Spitz won his seventh gold medal


On September 4, 1972, American swimmer Mark Spitz won his seventh gold medal at the Munich Olympics, winning the 400-meter medley relay with his team. He participated in seven events for which he won each time the gold medal and each time, beating the world record. He had already won four medals (2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) at the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968 when he was 18.

1998 : Creation of Google


On September 4, 1998, two students from Stanford University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, created a company Google and invested in a search engine that quickly became the most powerful in the world. Google now has over a million servers around the world dedicated to the search engine. 2006 : Crocodile hunter killed by a stingray


On September 4, 2006, Australian naturalist Steve Irwin, dubbed the "Crocodile Hunter" was killed by the bite of the spine of a large Dasyatidae in the chest while swimming along a group of stingrays on the Great barrier Reef, north of Cairns. The spine was 20cm long and could serve as a dagger. It was further poisoned. The naturalist was an Australian television star and was known for his knowledge of crocodiles.
