1922 : Discovery of the entrance to the tomb of Tutankhamun


On November 4, 1922, English Egyptologist Howard Carter and his team discovered the entrance to the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, near the tomb of Ramses VI in the Valley of the Kings. During the excavation, they found the grave intact, preserved for 3,000 years and containing fabulous treasures, which can be seen today in the Cairo Museum.

1956 : Russian tanks crush the uprising in Hungary


On November 4, 1956, Russian tanks crushed the uprising of the Hungarian people started 12 days earlier. Thousands of people were killed and 250,000 Hungarians left the country.

1979 : Iranian students take hostages at U.S. embassy


On November 4, 1979, Iranian students, supporters of Ayatollah Khomeini, stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took 60 American hostages. They demanded the return of the Shah, who fled his country at the beginning of the year, in Iran in order to judge him. President Carter answered the attack by declaring a total embargo on Iranian oil which immediately increased the energy crisis and caused increases of oil prices and panics at gas pumps.

1995 : Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin


On November 4, 1995, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a right-wing Jewish student in Tel Aviv. Rabin had negotiated peace agreements with the Palestinians and had received, together with Yasser Arafat, the Peace Nobel Prize in 1994.

2008 : Obama elected president


On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama was elected to the American presidency with 52.9% of the vote against his Republican opponent John McCain.
