1914 : Minimum wage of $5 per day at Ford

Henry Ford announced that his workers would receive a minimum wage of $5 per day and instituted the eight-hour workday.
When asked, he said he wanted his employees to earn enough to buy Ford cars.

1968 : Beginning of the Prague Spring

On January 5, 1968, Alexander Dubcek came to power in Czechoslovakia and proposed a range of political and economic reforms. In the country, it was the beginning of a period of freedom which is known as the Prague Spring, until the Soviet invasion of August 20.

1982 : 18,000 landslides in the San Francisco

On January 5, 1982, heavy rainfall caused more than 18,000 landslides in the San Francisco area, California. Nearly 8,000 houses were destroyed or severely damaged and 33 people were killed.

1993 : Shetland Isle Ecological Disaster

On January 5, 1993, the Liberian tanker MV Braer, carrying 85,000 tonnes of crude oil, is caught in a hurricane off the Shetland Islands and ran aground allowing the escape of large quantities of oil.
