1936 : Tornadoes in Mississippi and Georgia On April 5, 1936, 17 tornadoes struck the southern United States killing at least 436 people. An F5 tornado destroyed much of the city of Tupelo in Mississippi and one tornado of type F4 did extensive damage in the city of Gainesville, Georgia.
1955 : Winston Churchill retired On April 5, 1955, Winston Churchill, then aged 80 years, announced his decision to retire from politics due to health problems. He resigned from his post as Prime Minister two days later.

2009 : North Korea launched the Kwangmyongsong-2 On April 5, 2009, North Korea declared to have launched an experimental communications satellite on its launch ground at Musudan-ri. The United States and South Korea followed the rocket until it fell into the Pacific and the Russian space control found no trace of a satellite.
