1996 : Birth of DollyOn July 5, 1996, was born the first cloned mammal, a sheep named Dolly, at the Roslin Institute in Scotland. The announcement of the birth in February 1997 caused a media storm. Supporters were looking forward to an advanced medicine which would allow to genetically modify animals to make organ donors for humans or the cloning of human embryos for therapeutic purposes. Opponents feared the lack of safety and ethical issues as well as degeneration of the clones. |
