1946 : Introduction of the Bikini


On July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Reard, presented his bikini in a swimming pool in Paris. The name comes from the Bikini Atoll known at the time for its nuclear tests. This two-piece bathing suit, which covered very little for the time, was successful very quickly.

1950 : First U.S. soldier killed


On July 5, 1950, an American soldier was hit by a machine gun in Korea. This was the first American soldier to be killed during the Korean War.

1975 : Arthur Ashe


On July 5, 1975, Arthur Ashe beats Jimmy Connors at Wimbledon. It is the first Black to win this major tennis tournament .

1996 : Birth of Dolly


On July 5, 1996, was born the first cloned mammal, a sheep named Dolly, at the Roslin Institute in Scotland. The announcement of the birth in February 1997 caused a media storm. Supporters were looking forward to an advanced medicine which would allow to genetically modify animals to make organ donors for humans or the cloning of human embryos for therapeutic purposes. Opponents feared the lack of safety and ethical issues as well as degeneration of the clones.

2003 : SARS contained


On July 5, 2003, the World Health Organization announced that the syndrome of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) is contained. 775 people died of the virus.
