On April 6th, 1896, the modern Olympic Games were opened for the first time in Athens, Greece.

1909 : First men to reach the North Pole


On April 6, 1909, American explorers Robert E. Peary and Matthew A. Henson, accompanied by four Inuit men Ootah, Seeglo, Egingwah and Ooqueah, claimed they had reached the North Pole.

1917 : The United States declared war on Germany


On April 6, 1917, after the torpedoing of 5 American ships by German U-boat, and the speech of President Wilson before Congress, the U.S. formally declared war on Germany.

1930 : Salt Satyagraha


On April 6, 1930, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi ended his Dandi march, symbolically by harvesting salt water from the sea to protest against the British monopoly on the production and distribution of salt. This campaign earned him the prison and an immense popularity in India as well as in England.

1941 : Germany invaded Yugoslavia and Greece


On April 6, 1941, Germany launched Operation 25 and invaded Yugoslavia.
That same day it launched Operation Marita and invaded Greece.

1993 : Nuclear accident at the chemical complex of Tomsk-7 in Siberia


On April 6, 1993, an explosion occured at nuclear weapons complex in Tomsk-7, Siberia. Plutonium 239, of military origin, strontium 90, cesium 137 and other radioactive materials, in indefinite quantity, escaped from the factory. 200 km2 around the complex were contaminated. The number of people killed by the explosion remains unknown.

1994 : Assassination of Presidents of Rwanda and Burundi


On April 6, 1994, the plane carrying Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundian President Cyprien Ntaryamira was shot down. This event was the beginning of the massacre of Tutsis and moderate Hutus by Hutu soldiers and civilians. Between 800,000 and 1 million people were killed and hundreds of thousands of women had been raped between April and July 1994.

1998 : Pakistan tests medium range missiles


On April 6, 1998, Pakistan tested medium-range missiles capable of reaching neighboring India. Pakistan, like India, has nuclear weapons. With these missiles, Pakistan now has the opportunity to destroy his powerful neighbor.
