1945 : A nuclear bomb is dropped on Hiroshima


On August 6, 1945, at 8:16, the B-29 bomber Enola Gay launched the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. 80,000 people were killed and 60,000 others died during the following year. The city was practically destroyed by the explosion and fires that followed.
U.S. President Harry S. Truman decided to use this method to obtain a quick surrender of Japan and to avoid the loss of many American soldiers in the battle of Japan.

1985 : Disappearance of Philippe de Dieuleveult


On August 6, 1985, French reporter and television host, Philippe de Dieuleveult, mysteriously disappeared with his companions in a raid on a raft on the river Zaire.

1997 : A plane crashes on the Korean island of Guam


On August 6, 1997, Korean Air flight 801, carrying mainly tourists and people on their honeymoon, crashed while preparing to land on the island of Guam in the Pacific. 223 of the 254 passengers and crew of the Boeing 747 were killed.

2008 : Coup in Mauritania


On August 6, 2008, a coup led by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz overthrown the elected president Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi. Abdallahi came to power after the coup of 2005, also directed by Aziz, by becoming president after the 2007 elections.
