Protecting home from fire

A fire can spread very quickly in a house or apartment. Simple protective measures could prevent a large number of them.

If we smoke, we must be careful to extinguish our cigarette butts and empty our ashtrays. We should always put the lighters and matches out of reach of children, including babies.

We should also avoid smoking in bed or lying on a sofa when we tend to fall asleep that way.

People wearing loose clothing should be kept away from sources of fire.
When we light candles in a room, we should not leave them unattended.

Furnaces should be reviewed annually.
Electrical outlets should not be linked to too many devices simultaneously and electrical cords should be checked regularly to see if they have not been damaged.
The auxiliary heaters should not be left unattended and must have a system for automatically shutting off if dropped.

We should also have fire extinguishers in several locations in the house, and we should not forget that they must be reviewed regularly.

One of the most important points is to install smoke detectors on all floors of the house. They are now very affordable and can save lives. They should be tested monthly and batteries changed every six months. If over 10 years, they must be changed. We should not install them near a window or a duct.

For a house, we may also install an emergency escape system through the windows upstairs (rope, ladder ..) that can be used by the whole family if the staircase is no longer usable.

Finally, we must explain to each family member what to do in case of fire.
