1813 : The United States nicknamed Uncle Sam


On September 7, 1813, a New York newspaper wrote the story of the barrels of meat delivered to the U.S. Army during the Anglo-American war of 1812, packed by a man named Samuel Wilson and called Uncle Sam by the soldiers. Following the publication of this story, the nickname Uncle Sam was adopted by the people to refer to the federal government.

1911 : Apollinaire arrested for the theft of the Mona Lisa


On September 7, 1913, avant-garde poet Guillaume Apollinaire was arrested for the theft of Mona Lisa, stolen on August 22nd. He remained five days in jail before being released for lack of evidence. The real thief of the Mona Lisa, a former employee of the Louvre, was arrested two years later when he tried to sell the precious table.

1940 : Beginning of the blitz on London


On September 7, 1940, 300 German bombers dropped their bombs on London. This was the first of 57 nights that lasted the blitz. 40,000 people were killed and 1 million homes were destroyed.

1986 : Desmond Tutu becomes Archbishop


On September 7, 1986, Desmond Tutu was appointed Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Cape Town, South Africa. He was the first Black to be appointed to this position. Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace 2 years earlier for his nonviolent struggle against apartheid in his country.
