1936 : Disparition de Mermoz


Jean Mermoz disparaît au milieu de l'Atlantique à bord de la Croix du Sud.

1941 : Attack on Pearl Harbor


On December 7, 1941, over 360 Japanese planes attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawai. The surprise was total. 15 ships and 200 aircraft were destroyed and 2400 people were killed. On the other side, the three fleet carriers were on training maneuvers and were not affected. This attack officially led the United States to the war.

1975 : Indonesia invaded East Timor


On December 7, 1975, following the end of Portuguese control over that part of the island in August and the declaration of independence on November 28, Indonesia invaded East Timor in order to annex it. After three years of fighting and 100,000 civilian deaths, the annexation was complete. Resistance was organized during the following decades and East Timor was finally recognized as independent on May 20, 2002, through the efforts of the United Nations and people like Jose Ramos-Horta, President of the country since 2008, and Carlos Ximenes Belo, who both received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996. Since 2002, violence had persisted for a few years and the United Nations and Australia had to intervene to restore order.

1988 : Earthquake in Armenia


On December 7, 1988, at 11:41 local time, an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 on the Richter scale hit the region of Spitak in northern Armenia. 4 minutes later, a replica of magnitude 5.8 was felt. Numerous buildings collapsed. Hundreds of villages were damaged. More than 30,000 people were killed. For the first time since the end of the second World War, the Soviet Union, of which Armenia was still part, asked international assistance.

1995 : Galileo arrived at Jupiter


On 7 December 1995, more than six years after being launched by the shuttle Atlantis, the Galileo module arrived at Jupiter and staarted its mission of studies and observations. For 8 years, it took numerous pictures and measurements of the largest planet in the solar system and its moons.
