1932 : A French submarine sank off Cherbourg


On July 8, 1932, the submarine Prometheus sank while on tests off Cherbourg. 66 sailors were killed. Apparently a panel had been left open during a submerged test .

1947 : An unidentified object crashed in Roswell


On July 8, 1947, a UFO crashed near Roswell, New Mexico. The U.S. military recovered the object and refused to give further information. Even today, many people think it was an alien craft.

1950 : MacArthur appointed commander of UN forces in Korea


On July 8, 1950, President Truman appointed General Douglas MacArthur at the head of the United Nations forces in Korea that had been placed the day before under U.S. command by the United Nations.
MacArthur who had been the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, received the surrender of Japan and run Japan during the five years after the war.

1965 : Ronald Biggs escapes


On July 8, 1965, one of the robbers of Great Train Robbery escaped from Wandsworth Prison in London where he was serving a 30-year sentence. The Great Train Robbery is one of the largest thefts in the history of the United Kingdom (£ 2.6). The money was never found. After his escape, Biggs went into hiding in Brazil after passing through France and Australia. He returned to England in 2001 where he was arrested so that he finished his sentence. He was released in 2009.

1997 : Floods in Europe


On July 8, 1997, torrential rains causing devastating floods in the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. The Oder and the Rhine overflowed. 40% of the population in Poland and the Czech Republic was affected by the disaster.
