1956 : 262 miners trapped by fire


On August 8, 1956, a fire broke out in the coal mine of the Bois du Cazier in Marcinelle, Belgium. Rescue workers could reach the trapped miners only two weeks later. No miner survived. The disaster brought the Belgian and European authorities to improve safety procedures in the mines.

1963 : Attack of the Glasgow-London mail train


On August 8, 1963, a gang of 15 men helped by two informants, led by Bruce Reynolds, attacked the Glasgow-London mail train and stole £2.6 million. Most gang members were arrested but Ronnie Biggs and Bruce Reynolds managed to escape. The money was never found. The attack inspired the screenplay by Gérard Oury, The Brain, with Jean-Paul Belmondo, Bourvil and David Niven.

1974 : Nixon announces his resignation


On August 8, 1974, following the impeachment proceedings of the Congress in the Watergate scandal, U.S. President Nixon announced his resignation in a televised speech.

1988 : 8888 Uprising in Burma


On August 8, 1988 (8888), student protests were joined by other parts of the population in the capital and other major cities in Burma. The demonstrations, which demanded more democracy, were joined by more and more people and end in a bloodbath with the intervention of the military junta on September 18, 1988.

2008 : Opening of Beijing Olympics


On August 8, 2008 at 8pm 8min 8s in the, the opening of the Olympic Games Beijing Summer was officially made. 958 medals were distributed during the next 2 weeks. During these games, the American swimmer Michael Phelps won eight gold medals.
