1871 : Beginning of the Great Chicago Fire


On October 8, 1871, at 9 p.m., a fire broke out at a private home in the south west of Chicago. The fire spread quickly and soon a big part of the city was burning. The fire came under control only on October 10. 250 people were killed. Thousands of buildings were destroyed and 100,000 people - one third of the population - became homeless.

1967 : Che Guevara arrested


On October 8, 1967, the Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara was arrested by the Bolivian forces, aided by the CIA. He was executed the following day. Che Guevara played a major role in the Cuban Revolution between 1956 and 1959. He then helped the rebels in Congo. In 1966 he came to Bolivia to train an anti-government guerrilla group. After his death, he became a revolutionary icon and his stylized portrait is universally known.

1982 : Solidarity banned


On October 8, 1982, the Solidarity trade union was prohibited by the Polish authorities. Solidarity (or Solidarność ) is a group of trade unions of different branches in Poland, which was created on August 31, 1980, during the strikes in the Gdansk shipyards, which was headed at that time by Lech Wałęsa. 10 million of workers out of 13 were grouped in this union. Solidarity was authorized again for the democratic elections of 1989.

2005 : Earthquake in Kashmir


On October 8, 2005, an earthquake of moment magnitude 7.6 struck the Kashmir border region between Pakistani and India. 75,000 people were killed and many more are injured. 3 million people in the region were left homeless. Infrastructure having been destroyed, it was difficulty to reach this remote area to provide basic supplies. The disaster was further accentuated by the harsh winter which arrived a few weeks after the earthquake and slow reconstruction.
