1865 : General Lee surrendered


On April 9, 1865, in Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army surrendered to Union General Ulysses Grant, thus ending four years of civil war in the U.S..

1927 : Mae West arrested


On 9 April 1927, the actress Mae West was arrested on Broadway, while she was playing "Sex" that she wrote, produced and directed, and tens of thousands of people had already seen. She was prosecuted for public obscenity and sentenced to 10 days in jail for "corrupting the morals of youth".

1959 : NASA presented the first astronauts


On April 9, 1959, NASA presented to the world the first 7 astronauts taking part in Project Mercury, the first U.S. manned space program:
Carpenter, Cooper, Glenn, Grissom, Schirra, Shepard and Slayton.

1978 : Collapse of the Wilson Bridge in Tours


On April 9, 1978, in Tours, 4 arches of the Wilson Bridge, built in the eighteenth century, collapsed in the Loire, cutting off water supply for much of the city (a major pipeline going through the bridge). It was rebuilt identically.

2003 : The statue of Saddam Hussein is pulled down


On April 9, 2003, the statue of Saddam Hussein was destroyed by Iraqi people while the American tanks entered Baghdad.

April 9 is the Day of the Finnish language. This day was chosen to commemorate the death of the Finnish scholar and the father of written Finnish language, Mikael Agricola, on April 9, 1557.

On April 9, in the Philippines, we commemorates the fall of Bataan on 9 April 1942 and the Bataan Death March by which the Japanese forced 60,000 filipino prisoners and 15,000 American prisoners to reach Camp O'Donnell in conditions that were considered a war crime. 20,000 prisoners did not arrive at their destination.
