On August 9, 1936, in the 4x100m relay, the American athlete Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the Berlin Olympics. He had already won the 100m, 200m and long jump.

1945 : Atomic bomb on Nagasaki


On August 9, 1945, Japanese forces refusing to surrender after the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, the Americans launched a second atomic bomb, this time on Nagasaki. Approximately 70,000 people were killed. Japan surrendered six days later.

1969 : Actress Sharon Tate Murdered

1982 : Shooting in the Rue des Rosiers in Paris


On August 9, 1982, an attack was perpetrated against the Goldenberg restaurant, 7 rue des Rosiers in Paris. 6 people were killed and 22 injured. As the restaurant was located in a neighborhood with a strong Jewish community, anti-Semitic motivations of the attack were likely. However, the murderers were never found.
