1906 : Mining disaster in Courrières

On March 10, 1906 a gas explosion and a dust explosion destroyed part of a mine owned by Compagnie des Mines Courrières. More than 1100 people were killed. The emotion of the population and the controversy over the handling of the disaster led to strikes by miners demanding better working conditions. A political and social crisis ensued, and technical improvements were made in mining.

1945 : Tokyo firebombed

On March 10, 1945, 279 American bombers B-29 firebombed the city of Tokyo in Japan killing 100,000 people.

1959 : Tibetan People's Uprising

On March 10, 1959, the Tibetan people rose up against Chinese occupation and encircled the palace of the Dalai Lama to prevent him from being kidnapped by the Chinese, according to rumors. The Dalai Lama was forced to flee his country anyway on the 31st of March and seek political asylum in India. The rebellion was crushed and martial law imposed.

1969 : Martin Luther King

On March 10, 1969, James Earl Ray pleaded guilty of the murder of Martin Luther King Jr and was sentenced to 99 years in prison.

1977 : Uranus

On March 10, 1977, astronomers James L. Elliot, Edward W. Dunham, and Douglas J. Mink discovered rings around Uranus. 13 rings have been discovered to date.

1997 : Buffy

On March 10, 1997, the first episode of the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer created by Joss Whedon is broadcasted on The WB. The series was a worldwide success and had a huge cultural impact.
