1906 : Mining disaster in CourrièresOn March 10, 1906 a gas explosion and a dust explosion destroyed part of a mine owned by Compagnie des Mines Courrières. More than 1100 people were killed. The emotion of the population and the controversy over the handling of the disaster led to strikes by miners demanding better working conditions. A political and social crisis ensued, and technical improvements were made in mining. |

1959 : Tibetan People's UprisingOn March 10, 1959, the Tibetan people rose up against Chinese occupation and encircled the palace of the Dalai Lama to prevent him from being kidnapped by the Chinese, according to rumors. The Dalai Lama was forced to flee his country anyway on the 31st of March and seek political asylum in India. The rebellion was crushed and martial law imposed. |
