1940 : Beginning of the Battle of Britain


On July 10, 1940, Germany launched a series of raids against Great Britain to prepare for the invasion. Despite the lack of English pilots, their quality, combined with their Spitfires and Hurricanes, managed to counter the German attacks. In addition, British intelligence and radars as well as stoicism and participation in the war effort of the population were of immense help. After 3 ½ months of continuous attacks, the Germans were forced to abandon the invasion of England which made the British Prime Minister say these famous words: Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.

1943 : The Allies landed in Sicily


On June 10, 1943, the English led by Montgomery and the Americans under the command of Patton landed on the southern coast of Sicily. In three days 150,000 troops took position on the island. The British had conducted a campaign of disinformation to the Germans to make them believe that the landings would take place in Greece to have less of German soldiers on the ground Sicily.

1976 : Seveso disaster


On July 10, 1976, dioxin escaped from a chemical plant in Meda, Italy. The toxicity of this product was not immediately known while it was a component of Agent Orange, a defoliant used during the Vietnam War. The catastrophe is environmental above all: thousands of animals were killed and soil decontamination took years. 193 people were infected but could be treated.
Seveso gave its name to a European directive on classification of industrial sites according to their risk.

1985 : Sinking of Rainbow Warrior


On July 10, 1985, the ship of the environmental organization Greenpeace, the Rainbow Warrior, was sunk by French secret service agents in the port of Auckland in New Zealand. After witnessing the first explosion, a photographer for the organization, Fernando Pereira, was killed in a second explosion while trying to save his photographic equipment. Greenpeace protested at that time against the French nuclear tests at Mururoa, French Polynesia.
