1792 : Fall of the monarchy in France


On August 10, 1792, the Paris Commune, the revolutionary government of Paris, attacked the Tuileries Palace where King Louis XVI and his family were living. The Swiss guards were massacred. King was arrested and suspended from duty.
The people wanted to end the system of constitutional monarchy. The people being as revolted by it as by the king, the National Assembly, the only legal authority, invited all the French who are at least 25 years old to elect a National Convention to adopt a new constitution.

1793 : Opening of the Louvre Museum


On August 10, 1793, the Louvre is open to the public. It presents a major exhibition of paintings and other art objects from the royal collections or confiscated from the nobility or the clergy.

1945 : Japan announced its willingness to surrender to the Allies


On August 10, 1945, after the destruction of a second city by an atomic bomb, Japan announced its intention to surrender to allied forces provided that the Emperor could keep his position and status.

1990 : Magellan probe arrived in orbit of Venus


On August 10, 1990, the Magellan probe, launched by NASA on May 4, 1989, arrived into orbit of Venus. Its mission was to map the planet. It lasted 4 years and greatly increase the knowledge of this planet dominated by volcanism and tectonism.
