1897 : First offense due to drunk driving


On September 10, 1897, London taxi driver George Smith was arrested for drunk driving after hitting a building. He was the first person to be fined for this offense. He was sentenced to pay 25 shillings.

1961 : Accident at Grand Prix of Italy


On September 10, 1961, the German Formula 1 racing driver Wolfgang von Trips lost control of his Ferrari and hit spectators. 14 people were killed. The pilot also lost his life.

1976 : 2 planes collided over Zagreb


On September 10, 1976, flight 476 from British Airways, from London to Istanbul, struck a charter plane that had just taken off from Split to Cologne, above Zagreb in Yugoslavia.
The 176 passengers on two planes were killed.
At the time of the Cold War, the West aircrafts avoided the Soviet bloc countries and all passed through Yugoslavia, non-aligned country, to go east. Thus the airspace in the region of Zagreb was extremely crowded when the staff were few and did not have high-performance technical resources. The accident was caused by an error of a young and exhausted air traffic controller.
He will be the only person prosecuted by court as a result of the accident.

1977 : Last execution by guillotine in France


On September 10, 1977, Tunisian Hamida Djandoubi was guillotined at the Prison des Baumettes in Marseille. He was the last person sentenced to death to be executed in France. The death penalty wad abolished in 1981 and is also now banned throughout the European Union.
