1780 : Hurricane in the West Indies


On October 10, 1780, when American Revolution was winding down, while the British and French were fighting for the control of the West Indies, a very powerful hurricane striked the region. Martinique and Barbados were the most affected. Many ships were destroyed and 20,000 people died in the storm.

1973 : Vice President Spiro Agnew resigns


On October 10, 1973, Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned. He was accused of corruption and tax evasion. He agreed to plead guilty to tax evasion and to resign in exchange for the dropping of the charge of corruption. Less than a year later, President Nixon also resigned, following the Watergate scandal.

2010 : Dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles


October 10, 2010, the Netherlands Antilles are dissolved in 3 constituent states of the Kingdom of the Netherlands : Curacao, Sint Maarten and Aruba. Small islands became special municipalities of the Netherlands.
