1869 : Wyoming grants the right to vote to women


On December 10, 1869, the State of Wyoming passes laws giving voting rights to women. Legislators were not all acting for equality and justice: the goal was mainly to attract single women who were sorely lacking in the state.

1901 : First Nobel Prizes awarded


The inventor of dynamite Alfred Nobel, Swedish chemist had requested in his will that prizes should be awarded annually, with its heritage, to people who have contributed significantly to the good of humanity. The Peace Noble Prize is awarded by a Norwegian Parliamentary Committee. The Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Medicine and Economics are awarded by Sweden. Prizes are given on the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, Dec. 10.
Among the winners, there are the International Committee of the Red Cross (1917, 1944, 1963), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (1954, 1981), Martin Luther King Jr. (1964), Amnesty International (1977), Desmond Tutu (1984), Aung San Suu Kyi (1991), Doctors Without Borders (1999), Barack Obama (2009), Liu Xiaobo (2010) ...

1902 : Inauguration du barrage d'Assouan


Il y a 20 000 ans la vallée du Nil était submergée par une crue gigantesque en moyenne tous les dix ans. Ce phénomène naturel persista jusqu'en 1902, date à laquelle le premier barrage d'Assouan (es-Sadd, la digue ou el-Khazzan, le réservoir), construit par les Anglais, fut inauguré. Large de 2 km, ce barrage génère un lac artificiel de 300 km de long et sa capacité de retenue est de 5,3 milliards de mètres cubes d'eau.

International Day of Human Rights
En 1950, l’Assemblée générale des nations unies a invité tous les états et toutes les organisations internationales concernées à célébrer le 10 décembre de chaque année la Journée des droits de l’homme.
L’éducation aux droits de l’homme est bien plus qu’un sujet de leçon ou que le thème d’une journée: c’est un processus qui vise à ce que chacun soit équipé pour vivre sa vie dans la sécurité et la dignité. En cette Journée internationale des droits de l’homme, continuons ensemble à faire le nécessaire pour que les générations futures aient une culture des droits de l’homme, et à promouvoir la liberté, la sécurité et la paix dans tous les pays. Cette journée marque l’anniversaire de l’adoption en 1948, par l'Assemblée, de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme.
