1945 : End of the Yalta Conference


On February 11, 1945 the Yalta Conference ended during which U.S. President Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Churchill and Soviet leader Stalin decided the division of Europe. Roosevelt being sick and Churchill in a weak position - and both leaders having serious disagreements - Stalin could get anything he wanted.

1970 : Japan launches Oshumi


On February 11, 1970, Japan became the fourth space power by launching its first satellite, Oshumi.

1975 : Margaret Thatcher became the leader of the British Conservative Party


On February 11, 1975, the British Conservative Party chose for the first time a woman, Margaret Thatcher, to lead it. She became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1979, a position she kept for over 11 years.

1990 : Release of Mandela


On February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from the Robben Island prison after 27 years. The anti-apartheid activist, leading member of the African National Congress (ANC) was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life imprisonment. After his release, he led the negotiations that led to the end of apartheid, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and was elected President of South Africa in 1994.

2011 : Mubarak stepped down


On 11 February 2011, after 18 days of demonstrations of the Egyptian people and under pressure from the army, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned and retired in Sharm el-Sheikh.
