2004 : Madrid bombings


On March 11, 2004, four commuter trains are under attack from terrorists who exploded 10 bombs through mobile phones. Nearly 200 people are killed and 1,500 injured. The attack was attributed to Moroccan Islamists linked to al-Qaida attack in retaliation for Spain's involvement in the Iraq War.

2011 : Earthquake in Japan


On March 11, 2011 at 2:46 p.m. local time, an earthquake of moment magnitude 9.0 hits Japan, at 373 km from Tokyo. The devastating waves of the tsunami which follows cause immense damage. This is the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan at that time.
