1909 : Earthquake in Provence


On 11 June 1909, an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck the region of Salon-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhone. The villages of Lambesc Vernègues Saint-Cannat and Rognes are also damaged. 46 people are killed and more than 2000 houses and buildings are destroyed.

1955 : A car crashed into the grandstand for 24 hours of Le Mans


On 11 June 1955, the French car driver Pierre Levegh swerved to avoid another vehicle and crashed into the crowd, causing 82 deaths. The race was not stopped so that the spectators remained in their places and that the paramedics could do their work.

1963 : JFK versus Wallace


On June 11, 1963, President Kennedy forced Governor Wallace of Alabama to follow the decisions of federal courts, to end segregation laws of the State and to allow black students to enroll at the University. That day, Wallace standed before the University of Alabama to prevent two black students enrollment when President Kennedy issued a presidential proclamation ordering the governor to comply with court decisions and ordered the National Guard of Alabama to enforce it. Wallace gave in and students could register.

1982 : ET the Extra-Terrestrial is released


On 11 June 1982, the Steven Spielberg film, ET the Extra-Terrestrial was released in theater. This is the story of an encounter between an alien forgotten on earth by his friends and a young boy, Elliot, played by Henry Thomas. Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore played Elliot's brother and sister. The film received a phenomenal success and is one of the highest-earning in the history of cinema.

June 11 is Kamehameha Day in Hawaii in honor of King Kamehameha I who united the islands of Hawaii from 1795.
On this day, the statues of King Kamehameha I are covered with flower necklaces and big flower parades led by riders on horseback parade in all islands.
