1952 : Hussein became King of Jordan


On August 11, 1952, prince Hussein became King of Jordan when his father abdicated for health reasons. He was only 16. During his 47 year reign, despite the various wars, he tried to maintain good relations with all his neighbors including Israel and with Europe and the USA.

1965 : Riots in Watts


On August 11, 1965, riots broke out in Watts, a poor suburb of Los Angeles, after the arrest of three people living in the neighborhood, two brothers and their mother. For six days, people had attacked the police, prevented firemen from doing their job and plundered stores. LAPD Police Chief tried to calm the rioters by calling them "monkeys in a zoo."
1000 buildings, most run by whites, were destroyed. 34 people were killed and 1000 injured.
