187 : Earthquake in India


On June 12, 1987, an earthquake of moment magnitude 8.8 hit the region of Shillong in the north of India. Over 1500 people were killed and the area devastated reached 260,000 km2.

1942 : Anne Frank


On June 12, 1942, Anne Frank, a young German Jew living in Holland, received a diary for her 13th birthday. The next two years, she wrote her daily life when she was hiding with her family and others people in the company where his father worked. They were denounced and deported to Auschwitz in 1944. Anne Frank and her sister Margot died at Bergen-Belsen, where they had been transferred after the evacuation of Auschwitz.
Her father, the sole survivor of the family, published her diary, that friends had found, after the war.

1964 : Nelson Mandela


On 12 June 1964 the leader of the ANC (African National Congress) Nelson Mandela is sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage. As leader of a movement that the government of South African apartheid designated as a terrorist, he was wanted by security forces.
He was arrested on August 5, 1962, after 17 months on the run, with the help of the CIA.

1994 : Nicole Brown Simpson was murdered.


On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson, football star OJ Simpson's ex-wife and her friend Ron Goldman were murdered outside the home of the young woman. Faced with overwhelming evidence that were accusing him, OJ Simpson escaped by car in order to fled the country and the chase between the police and him was nationally watched.
At his trial, he was defended by top lawyers and was acquitted.
During the civil trial he was sentenced to pay 33.5 million dollars to the families of the victims.
He is now serving a sentence of 33 years in prison for a case of kidnapping and armed robbery in Las Vegas.
