1901 : First wireless message across the Atlantic


On December 12, 1901, in Canada, Italian physicist Marconi received the first wireless message across the Atlantic from England.

1913 : The Mona Lisa is recovered


On December 12, 1913, the famous painting Mona Lisa is recovered and the thief arrested in Florence, Italy. The masterpiece of Leonardo da Vinci was stolen on August 21, 1911 at the Louvre in Paris. The thief, Vincenzo Perugia, former painter-restorer at the Louvre, wanted, according to him, the painting back to Italy where it was made. The Mona Lisa went back to the Louvre and since this moment have been given a great protection.

1999 : Sinking of the tanker Erika


The Erika, chartered by the oil company Total and under Maltese flag sinks near Penmarc'h (Finistère). It carries 37,000 tons of heavy fuel oil. Over 400 kilometers of coastline are contaminated between the Finistère and the Vendee.
