1915 : Earthquake in Italy On January 13, 1915, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale hit the city of Avezzano and its region in central Italy. Nearly 30,000 people were killed including 96% of the population of the town of Avezzano.

1939 : Devastating bushfires in Australia On January 13, 1939, massive bushfires devastated the State of Victoria in Australia. This Black Friday, 4,942,000 acres of land were destroyed and 71 people were killed.
1985 : Train accident in Ethiopia On 13 January 1985, a train fell into a ravine in Ethiopia killing more than 400 passengers.
2001 : Earthquake in El Salvador On January 13, 2001, an earthquake of moment magnitude 7.6 hit San Miguel and its area in El Salvador. Nearly 1,000 people were killed in the earthquake and landslides that followed, and hundreds of thousands of buildings destroyed.
2011 : Riots in Tunis On January 13, 2011, violent clashes took place in Tunis between protesters of the Revolution of Jasmin and government forces. 8 people were killed. Other demonstrations took place in the country and the seaside resort of Hammamet was looted.
