1881 : Assassination of Tsar Alexander II


On March 13, 1881, after five failed attempts, the Tsar Alexander II of Russia ended up being murdered by members of the revolutionary movement Narodnaya Volya.

1884 : Beginning of the Siege of Khartoum


On March 13, 1884, the siege of a garrison of Khartoum, defended by British and Egyptian forces led by General Gordon (7000 men), by Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad's troops (50000 men) began. After 10 months of siege, the garrison is invaded by the the Mahdists on January 26th 1885 and everybody there was killed.

1954 : Beginning of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu


On March 13, 1954, General Giap and the Viet Minh forces stormed against the French troops entrenched in the valley Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam. This battle ended on May 7 by the victory of the Viet Minh.
