1919 : Massacre in Amritsar in the Punjab Province


On April 13, 1919, British General Reginald Dyer fired on a peaceful crowd gathered in Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, India. 337 people were killed and 1500 injured.

1941 : Neutrality Pact between the Soviet Union and Japan


On April 13, 1941, the Soviet Union and Japan signed a neutrality pact for a period of 5 years. The pact was denunciated on April 5, 1945 by USSR, in accordance with the agreements of Yalta and the Soviet Union declared war on Japan on August 8, 1945.

Songkran
On April 13 starts the Songkran, New Year's Theravada Buddhism, throughout southeast Asia. On April 13 we celebrate Mahasongkran, the last day of the previous year. April 14 is Wan Nao, the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok, when the new year begins. For the occasion, temples and houses are cleaned and we mark respect for our elders by pouring scented water on their hands. Water is a sign of purification of body and mind. Today the festival has become a huge water fight in the streets in much of southeast Asia.
