1542 : Mary Stuart became Queen of Scotland


Aged just six days, Mary Stuart became Queen of ECOOS, following the death of his father on December 14. It will remain on the throne from 1542 to 1567.

1819 : Alabama annexed to the United States


Alabama becomes the 22nd state of the U.S.A.

1911 : Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole


On 14 December 1911, the Norwegian Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole. With four men and 52 dogs, Amundsen planted the Norwegian flag, and then became a national hero.

1995 : Dayton Accord


The leaders of Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia sign the Dayton Accord in Paris which ended more than 3 years of conflict.

2004 : Opening of the Millau viaduct


The Millau viaduct is opened. This is the tallest bridge in the world.

2006 : Ban Ki-moon became United Nations secretary general


Ban Ki-moon was appointed Secretary General of the United Nations in New York. He became the eighth Secretary General and took office on 1 January 2007.

2008 : Shoe thrown at George Bush


Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi sends a shoe to the face of President George W Bush at a press conference in Baghdad. He said: "This is a farewell ... you dog!"
He missed the president.
