1898 : USS Maine sank in Havana harbor


On February 15, 1898, the U.S. Navy ship USS Maine sank in Havana harbor in Cuba. The island of Cuba was in revolt against Spanish rule and the U.S. Navy had come to support Cuban. Although it has never been proven that the Spanish had sunk the ship, this incident led to the Spanish-American War.

1971 : Decimal Day


The United Kingdom and Ireland decimalised their currencies. From this day, one pound equals 100 pence. Until this day, a pound was worth 20 shillings and a shilling was worth 12 pence.

1989 : Soviet troops withdrawal from Afghanistan


On February 15, 1989, after 9 years of war, the last Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan.

1996 : Sea Empress


On 15 February 1996, the Liberian supertanker, the Sea Empress ran aground on the Welsh coast at the entrance of Milford Haven. Over 70,000 tons of crude oil escaped from its hull and caused serious damage to the local environment.
