2011 : Explosion at the Fukushima nuclear plant


On 15 March 2011, a third explosion occurred at reactor No. 2 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, north of Tokyo in Japan. The plant was seriously damaged by the tsunami that followed the 11 march earthquake, of magnitude 9.0. The 15-meter wave had flooded facilities and had damaged the cooling systems. The first explosion took place at reactor No. 1 on March 12 and the second, a double explosion, at reactor No. 3 on March 14. With this third explosion, significant radiation leaks were released into the atmosphere.
