1811 : Independence of Paraguay


On May 15, 1811, Paraguay declared its independence from Spain.

1896 : Sherman destroyed by a tornado


On 15 May 1896, a F5 tornado destroyed the town of Sherman, Texas. Most houses were razed and debris were found up to 56 miles away.

1942 : Creation of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps


On May 5, 1942, Congress created the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) which gave the status of military to women working for the army, which entitled them to the same benefits as men.

1948 : Arab attack against Israel


On May 15, 1948, the day after Israel's independence, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Saudi Arabia attacked the new country. The war lasted a year before a cease-fire determined provisional borders.

1988 : Beginning of Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan


On May 15, 1988, the Soviets began to withdraw from Afghanistan after more than 8 years of war.
The Soviets came to Afghanistan in late 1979 to support the pro-Communist government. 15,000 Soviet soldiers were killed during the war which also cost billions of dollars.
