1914 : Opening of the Panama Canal


On August 15, 1914, the Panama Canal is opened to traffic. The first work of construction began in 1881 when the territory of Panama belonged to Colombia. After various vicissitudes, the territory eventually became independent, the channel being built by the United States and the Canal Zone being under the control of the United States in exchange for assistance to Panama. Control of the Panama Canal will be given to Panama by the United States on 31 December 1999.

1944 : Landing in Provence


On August 15, 1944, Allieds forces (mostly American and French troops) landed in Provence on different beaches of the Var coast (Operation Anvil Dragoon).
In retaliation, 21 resistants were shot by the Gestapo in Nice on the edge of the Paillon river in the Ariane district and 8 resistants in the villa Montfleury, headquarters of the Gestapo in Cannes.

1945 : VJ Day


On August 15, 1945, following the announcement by U.S. President Harry S Truman of the surrender of Japan, the day was declared Victory in Japan Day.

1945 : Gyokuon-hōsō


August 15, 1945, the Japanese emperor gave a speech on the radio, called Gyokuon-hōsō, announcing the defeat of Japan and calling for a ceasefire.
His way of speaking being perfectly incomprehensible to ordinary people, the radio station gave a more understandable version right afterwards.

1969 : Opening of the Woodstock Festival


On August 15, 1969, the Woodstock Festival in Bethel opened in New York. 500,000 people gathered to attend this concert symbolizing peace and harmony. 32 groups and soloists such as Sweetwater, Santana, Credence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, The Who, Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix and Joan Baez performed.
It remains one of the most important moments in the history of music.

1998 : Apple launched iMac


On August 15, 1998, Apple launched its new computer, iMac, based on a revolutionary design combining CPU and monitor into one cube.
