1894 : Alfred Dreyfus arrested


On October 15, 1894, young captain Alfred Dreyfus was arrested for spying because he was Jewish. The evidence was inconclusive and the real culprit was clearly identified in 1896. But because of an extremely violent anti-Semitic campaign of anti-Dreyfusards for years, Dreyfus was only rehabilitated in 1906, thanks to the action of his supporters like Anatole France, Henri Poincare, Georges Clemenceau and particularly Emile Zola.

1945 : Pierre Laval is executed for high treason


On October 15, 1945, former Premier Pierre Laval was executed for high treason by the French authorities. Pacifist and anti-communist politician in the 1930s, he had become a zealous collaborator and a puppet of Hitler when he became head of the Vichy government during the war. When France was liberated, he fled to Germany and then to Spain, from which he was expelled before joining Austria, where he surrendered to the U.S. authorities who extradited him to France.

1951 : First synthesis of a progestin by the Mexican chemist Luis E. Miramontes


On October 15, 1951, Mexican chemist Luis E. Miramontes synthesized the norethindrone, the progestin to be used in the first oral contraceptive pills.

1966 : Creation of the Black Panther Party


On October 15, 1966, the Black Panther party was created by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California to protect African Americans against police brutality. The party engaged in leftist ideologies and had a great influence in U.S. politics in the 1960s and 1970s.

1990 : Mikhail Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize


On October 15, 1990, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the Cold War, its democratic and economic reforms and its policy of nonintervention in the upheavals of Eastern Europe countries.
